How to Get the Right Bra Size
Bras are sized in two sizes called band and cup. A 36D labeled bra has a band size of 36 inches and a D cup size. But what does that mean to you?
There is considerable variation in the volume, shape, size and spacing of women’s breasts. The volume of a woman’s breasts can be more down, on the sides or up, and this will affect the size actually needed. Bra sizes are just a way to standardize these factors for a “close” fit, which isn’t necessarily the right fit. Bras usually have adjustable hooks that allow minor adjustments to a bra’s fit.
It doesn’t help that different countries have different measurement systems, with European countries choosing to measure in centimeters while England and America choose inches.
So how do you determine the right bra size for you?
First, you need to find a good tape measure and take off all the clothes. The first measurement you need to establish is your band size – which is your ribcage measurement and you should place the tape measure just below your bust and read the number of inches to the nearest inch. So if it’s a little over 30, call it 30, but if it’s closer to 31, call it 31 inches. If you measure in centimeters, you must round the number to the nearest 5 cm.
If your measurement was an odd number, add 5 inches to your original measurement. If it was even, add 4 inches. So if your original measurement was 25, that gives a band size of 30 inches or if your original measurement was 28, that gives a band size of 34 inches.
Second, you should measure the fullest part of your bust in the same way. Keep the tape measure firm but not too tight to get an accurate reading. Stand up straight with your arms at your sides for an accurate measurement – it can be helpful to have someone else help you with this piece.
The tee difference between the two measurements is then used to calculate the cup size. If the difference is less than 1 inch you are AA cup, 1 inch difference would be A cup, 2 inch difference would be B cup and so on up to 15 inches difference which would make you a K cup. It should be noted that some bra makers do not follow the standard size and call what should be an E cup a DDD cup, but most adhere to agreed standards.
Cup size is not standard for all band sizes as it is a relative measurement. So a 34B does not have the same cup size as a 38B but a 38AA. The general rule is that the volume of a bra is the same whether you go up one band size and one cup size down or one band size down and one cup size up.
This is the mistake most people make when choosing bras because they go for too small a cup size and too big a band size. Which won’t support you properly and make you look your best. If you have larger breasts and always wear the wrong size, it can lead to medical issues as you get older, so it’s definitely worth taking the time to measure yourself properly.
In the UK the most common size is a 36C, but this (and you) changes over time, so try to measure yourself once a year to make sure you’re still wearing the right size bra.
