A Thrilling Tale: Robin and the Drug Smugglers

The host, Mr Trevor John, addressed all the boarders gathered in the school grounds of Daly College, the first boarding school established for the English in Indore. Well boys,” he said, “today is reservation day. Any senior boys who want to book can give their name to the house warden. But remember boys, be back at six o’clock at night; that’s the deadline.” Robin Singh a class X student looked up at the sky. It was bright and sunny. Oh! He thought what a pleasure it was to ride the bike for a long ride across the country. His thoughts were interrupted by a light tap on his shoulder. It was the deputy director, Mr. Gopal Singh.

“Hey Robin, what’s your plan? Are you going to do a swing on your bike?” He asked.

“Sir” answered Robin

The whole school knew that Robin was a long-distance cycling ace. It wasn’t until the last state-level meet that he won the 10,000-meter race in record time. His sporting master had high hopes that Robin would make it big on the international stage.

Robin put on his cycle a stylish Raleigh given to him after his last victory by Raja de Dewas. He drove under clear blue skies to the nearby military cantonment of MHOW or as the British called it the military headquarters of the war. at breakneck speed as he tested the machine and his own endurance to the limit. He soon crossed the cantonment which was about twenty kilometers from his school. Within moments, Mhow was left behind. The road has now become quite desolate with barely a pedestrian and only a strange truck to keep it company. He walked forward and soon saw a small road winding through the hills. He slowed down and turned onto a secondary road. It was a lonely road lined with lush green trees. After a few minutes, he decided to rest and parked his bike in the shade of a large banyan tree. Pulling his water bottle from the small bag on the back of his bike, he took a whiff of cold water and thought about the next game at the state level. He wanted to win it. At that time, he was surprised to see the flight of birds from a tree some distance away. Obviously, the birds had been scared. Intrigued, he put the bottle down and looked in the direction of the birds’ flight. A moment later, he heard a scream. It was a frightening noise that shattered the tranquility of the area. He looked in the direction of the noise. Just ahead, a small hill hid the horizon from his eyes. The spirit of adventure ignited him as he headed up the small hill. He was sure the cry was that of a man, possibly in great danger. He quickly climbed the hill and sheltering behind a clump of trees looked down. A strange sight presented itself to his eyes. A brown jeep was parked and next to it stood four men. It was obvious that one of the men was held firmly by two of the men while a third man stood in front. Robin noted that he was wearing dark glasses with a curved dagger in his right hand.

Instinctively, he hit the ground and looked up, fearing he had stumbled upon the scene of a gigantic crime. The dark-glassed man hissed “Karim Bhai, why do you want to die. Tell us where the opium is and I’ll leave you alone.” The man called Karim moaned “Patel sahib, spare me…I don’t have the opium.”

“You mean you sold it?”

“Sahib”

“So where’s the money? The opium was worth a fortune”

“I lose it… but I will pay…”

“You rascal…”

Robin saw the blade glinting in the sun as it descended with great force and entered the stomach of the man called Karim”

“Die, you… you insect”

Robin saw Patel Bhai stab Karim several times. The man slumped forward as Patel Sahib sheathed his blood-covered dagger. The other two men laughed “Patel sahib, it’s good that you killed the bastard, he was a real snake”

“Yes” replied Patel sahib.

“It was a nice ploy to call him here” commented one of the men “Sahib you are a real genius, even the local police inspector is on your payroll”

At that, everyone laughed. Startled, Robin held his breath as he admired the bloody scene. He thought it best to leave and slowly he started to back away. Unwittingly, his hand dislodged a small stone that rolled down the side of the hill.

“What is that?” shouted the man called Patel sahib, then his eagle eye saw Robin walking away.

“There is a boy” he cried “By the grace of Krishna, catch him and kill him; I don’t want any witnesses to this”

“Huzoor” the two men replied in unison as they walked towards Robin.

“Idiots” shouted Patel sahib “come with me in the jeep, we will soon catch the villain”

Robin quickly slid back to his bike. His ears rang with what he had heard. He knew he was alone, with these desperadoes behind him. He remembered reading Sherlock Holmes and the famous detective’s words to his friend Dr. Watson echoed in his eyes “Watson the game is on…”

He quickly got into the saddle, remembering that in this case he was the game.

Robin takes stock of the situation. He realized that if he was cycling on the road, there was a good chance that the crooks would catch him on their jeep. So he left the metal road and headed towards the groves of trees and twisted rocks that dotted the scene. A shout from behind alerted him to the jeep following him into the countryside. Patel sahib looked sternly at the other two men and said “Smasher, cock your gun and keep it ready; as soon as you have the boy in sight, shoot to kill”

“Huzoor” replied the man called Shamsher, pulling out a sinister-looking gun and pointing it at the fleeing boy. Robin, now evident for the scenic beauty, rode for dear life. He remembered that right next to the cantonment there was a small police station; so he walked in his general direction. Behind him, he could hear the jeep following, its engine creeping away ominously. The jeep found it difficult to follow Robin as the countryside was hilly and dotted with rocks and trees, allowing Robin to stay ahead. He took in deep breaths as he rode the bike forward, his heart beating like a machine. In front of him, he was comforted by the sight of a small wood and he walked towards it with enthusiasm. Seeing Robin heading towards the clump of trees, Patel Sahib shouted “Catch the boy Shamsher – otherwise we risk losing him” Shamsher took aim and fired. The calm of the countryside was shattered by a gunshot, but as the jeep was in motion, Shamsher’s aim was unsteady and he missed the weaver boy. Robin walked through the copse and breathed a sigh of relief seeing the main road ahead of him and a bit past the police station. He pedaled powerfully towards her. He entered the enclosure and headed for the small office. He walked through the door and saw a small office. He walked in the door and saw a little man sitting there. Robin could guess he was a sub-inspector. Startled, the policeman looked at Robin and asked “Boy, what are you doing here?”

Robin didn’t like the look on the man’s face, but he replied anyway “Sir, I just saw a murder happening, some distance from here and the killers are following me in a jeep”

“A brown Jeep? asks the inspector.

“Yes sir” answered Robin, but he wondered how the inspector could have known the color of the jeep. The inspector gestured for him to sit down.

“Don’t worry” he said, “I’ll catch them soon, but you stay here and you’re not going anywhere”

Robin looked out the door and his heart skipped a beat when he saw the same jeep drive into the compound. He could make out the three thugs sitting inside.

“Is it the men?” asked the inspector. Robin nodded with a slight trace of doubt in her mind. Motioning Robin to stay seated, the inspector walked out toward the jeep. He reached the jeep as the occupants were getting out. Robin could guess that they were known to the inspector. He saw Patel Sahib smiling broadly as he shook hands with the inspector. Aghast Robin saw the inspector pointing to the desk with his thumb. God! Robin thought, this man is in cahoots with Patel sahib. He didn’t linger a moment but quickly jumped out of the window; land with a thud outside. He wished he had his bike with him, but realized it would be dangerous to try to retrieve it as it was parked in the compound. Robin put his athletic body to good use as he sneaked into the countryside. He ran parallel to the road, taking cover from time to time to conceal his movement. He wondered about the reaction of the men when they entered the police station. Obviously, they wouldn’t be happy with his escape. As he ran, he kept an eye on the road in hopes of seeing a police patrol vehicle to help him. He knew the men in the jeep were hardened criminals. Soon, out of the corner of his eye, he spotted a blue-colored gypsy and instinctively knew it was a police patrol vehicle. He stopped and waved his arms widely to attract the attention of the occupants. They saw it and slowed down. Robin headed towards the Gypsy Patrol eagerly. Panting, he stopped beside her and looked at the policemen with hope and anticipation. He was reassured at the sight of them. They were two inside. One of them, a benevolent-looking man with a big mustache, smiled at Robin.

What’s up my son?” he asked softly.

Robin quickly recounted the sequence of events. The man listened attentively. It was obvious he believed Robin. Just as Robin finished, the maroon-colored jeep appeared from behind. He saw Patel sahib and his followers sitting in the jeep. Gypsy police they sped and sped.

“It’s the men” panted Robin “They’re leaving”

The man smiled “They won’t get far son”

He tuned the wireless set and spoke into the mic

“Inspector Tripathi calls. Runaway jeep with possible criminals flees on Mhow road. Intercept and arrest”

He turned off the set and smiled “Let’s see how far they go. And your son better come home”

Robin smiled, very relieved “But please take me back to the police station because my bike is parked there”

Robin climbed into the Gypsy as it backed up. Just then, the radio crackled. The voice was clear and crisp “Good show Tripathi. Jeep with famous smuggler Patel sahib apprehended with sub-inspector Ramu”

The inspector smiles “It was the DSP”

Robin has arrived at school. He slowly entered the vast complex. The call was over. Only the master of the house was standing with a ledger. Seeing Robin approaching he looked a bit sternly and said “You’re fifteen minutes late Robin; A deadline is a deadline”

“Sir”

“Well, no passes for you next Sunday” said the householder with an air of finality

Robin smiled weakly. He wondered if he should tell the Master of the House about the extraordinary events of the day, but decided against it. Maybe he wouldn’t believe it. He just walked into the dorm and fell into a deep sleep.

Two days later, Robin was called with his householder to the directors’ office. Robin entered the room and saw the principal sitting pompously. Seated in front of the principal was the householder along with Sub-Inspector Tripathi and another man sporting numerous ribbons across his chest. He was Inspector General of Police. The principal beamed “Robin, you did the school proud. IG tells me you helped catch Patel Sahib, a notorious drug dealer.

The IG smiled “Bien bas son”.
