Honda – They’re Good Guys Really

The world of Formula 1 is currently in turmoil with the emergence of lesser teams winning races and mocking the so-called ‘big’ teams. After a solitary victory in his career, Jenson Button has now won three of the four races of the 2009 season with Brawn GP and is, at the time of this writing, the favorite for the drivers’ title. This is only the beginning of the fairy tale. Just four months ago, Honda announced it was quitting the sport due to financial losses from the global recession. It meant the potential loss of around 800 jobs at F1 headquarters in Brackley and more publicly at Jenson as well, before Brawn GP was formed from the ashes just a month before the start of the 2009 season.

The huge sum of money that Honda had pumped into the sport is a clear indication that the Japanese firm had every intention of giving Formula 1 its best shot and becoming the most competitive team on the grid. Sadly, despite being the richest team in the paddock, Honda have never been competitive – their only victory in Hungary in 2006 when all the others crashed out in the wet, leaving Button afloat to cross the line towards the checkered flag. I once went to a car show and saw a little boy jump up and down on the front fender of the Honda F1. It was the first time this season that the car was not broken (much to the relief of his father’s wallet). However, despite this poor track record, Honda had high hopes for this season. Realizing that money is nothing without design, they canceled development of the car from the 2007 and 2008 seasons, leaving Button to take over after everyone else at the back of the grid. The mission said Honda had to win races frequently in 2009 and all their resources for two years were gobbled up. After checking the bank balance, development costs had taken their toll and Honda decided that spending money on its production cars was much less frivolous. So it’s a fairy tale that after the company’s shock exit, Jenson and the team aren’t just employed in some way, but get everyone on the grid to amateurs. The situation is real life thunder days, where Tom Cruise joins a struggling racing team (in this case NASCAR, rather than F1) with no sponsors, money or hope and yet somehow wins. Seeing the sponsorship-free Brawn GP car on its livery is a constant reminder of how this team shouldn’t even do on race day and how uplifting it is that they do it and win. Through all the superlatives for Brawn GP and in particular Jenson Button, no one seems to mention Honda. Yeah, they rushed hard into the sunset, but that was to make sure the general public still had new cars to buy, that factories around the world weren’t closing and frankly so that the fantastic Civic Type R can remain in production. Brawn GP drives the car that Honda built and so I imagine Honda is gutted because he himself is not on the top step of the podium. I guess we’ll never know if the finances could have been reallocated to allow Honda to run a car in a race or two in 2009 and therefore reap the huge financial rewards that Brawn GP is receiving now. Honda also very publicly halted production of the Civic for three months at its Swindon plant, although thankfully all employees are now back to their daily jobs. Ironically, what all the fuss means is that there’s never been a better time to buy a Honda. They’re not in danger of going out of business anytime soon, their lineup of cars is very strong, and most importantly for you, their prices are coming down. 0% financing is now offered on many cars in their lineup, including the Civic, Civic Type R and CR-V. The 0% finance packages also include free severance coverage, which means Honda will pay up to 12 of your monthly payments should the worst happen to your job.

The Civic Type R with the top-spec GT specification which includes rain-sensing wipers, fog lamps and a host of interior comforts can be had with a down payment of £6,085 with 36 monthly payments of £199 and a final payment of £6,026.17. When you know that there was barely six months that there was a waiting list for the Type R, it may be time to take the plunge.
