Will There Be Enough Space in Space Colonies for Sports?
Not too long ago, our think tank was discussing the future of human and space sports. Specifically, sports in orbiting space hotels, exhibition games, the future of the Galactic Olympics, and the types of sports that could be played in off-world space colonies. Yes, I agree that this is a somewhat interesting topic, and indeed esoteric in nature. Of course, a think tank must consider extraterrestrial ideas, innovations, concepts, and inventions – after all, that’s what think tanks do. Alright, let’s answer that question, okay?
Obviously, there are sports that cannot be practiced in space colonies because they are practiced here on Earth; due to gravitational arrest or the space available in the building. Obviously, it makes no sense to build a giant baseball, soccer or football stadium to play these sports. Therefore, these sports must be heavily modified; just like indoor football is a very good version of the type of football we play outdoors in NFL stadiums, but on a much smaller field.
So what kinds of sports will humans do in space? There are many sports that do not take up much space. What about fencing for example or wrestling, mixed martial arts, etc. ? All these sports can be practiced in very restricted spatial environments. Basketball and tennis can be potential options, but again, they may require slight modification. The game would be the same for the players, but the fields would be smaller. Racquetball could be a perfect sport because it only takes one play.
Sports such as running a marathon are probably out of the question if they are to be practiced indoors, although in the future there may be special space suits, which are currently being designed, which would allow athletes to run say the surface of the moon or Mars. Of course, with less gravity, the runners’ times could be quite spectacular. And speaking of outdoor sports with special scuba gear, what about rock climbing or even mountain biking?
If there is water available, maybe swimming could also survive as a sport in space. We already know that they will be golfing on the lunar surface and driving their golf carts on the Martian surface, that seems like a no-brainer. However, when it comes to sports and space, especially indoor sports, it will all be about “space” when you think about it. Indeed, I hope you will consider all of this.
