What to Include in Your All Inclusive Jamaica, Negril Vacation
The island of Jamaica is many things, but none of them are underestimated. Jamaica seduces like a peacock in a barnyard full of chickens. Throughout its long and turbulent history, Jamaica has captivated everyone from Christopher Columbus to Spanish and British settlers to Errol Flynn. Ian Fleming, who gave the world James Bond, lived on the north coast of Jamaica. Noel Coward, a bit of a peacock himself, had a mansion on a hill overlooking Port Maria.
Jamaica is dominated by a range of steep hills and mountains, including Blue Mountain Peak, which rises over 7,400 feet above sea level. Jamaica has 120 notable rivers, all of which begin in these mountains before emptying out along the Jamaican coast. For all the glory of Jamaica’s mountains, its main tourist attractions remain its beaches, with the towns of Port Antonio, Montego Bay and Ocho Rios being called veritable hotbeds of tourism.
The prettiest of all Jamaica’s beaches, however, is found in the west coast town of Negril. The sun on the white sands of Seven Mile Beach in Negril glistens against the deep blue of the ocean like the sun glinting off freshly fallen snow against a deep blue winter sky. But there, the comparison between Seven Mile Beach and a northern winter must end, because on the coldest days, Jamaican beachfront temperatures rarely drop below the 70s.
While the overwhelming majority of tourists visiting Negril and Seven Mile Beach are there to soak up the sun and cool off with a variety of water sports like scuba diving, sailing and water skiing, Negril has other attractions . The massive wetlands surrounding Negril are home to the 300-acre Royal Palm Reserve. As you walk along the boardwalk that crosses the reserve, you can observe a large number of bird species, including osprey, Jamaican woodpeckers, egrets and the endangered black parakeet.
Birds, however, far outnumber mosquitoes, so be prepared with plenty of insect repellent. Make time to visit the reserve’s nature museum at Cotton Tree Lake, and if you get hungry, treat yourself to a lunch of authentic Jamaican cuisine at the lakeside restaurant.
Negril can be your jumping-off point to inland Jamaica when you want a break from the beach scene. If your favorite way to see the world is on horseback, head 3 miles north of Negril to the Rhodes Hall Plantation, where you’ll be paired with a mount suited to your riding ability. The two-hour horseback tour will continue into the hills, passing groves of banana and coconut trees and stopping to watch crocodiles. The plantation also offers opportunities for fishing and scuba diving.
Recover from your day of outdoor activities by treating yourself to some of Negril’s legendary nightlife. In reggae? Try Alfred’s on Norman Manley Boulevard, where you won’t have to worry about entry fees on Saturdays, Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.
No vacation is complete without plenty of shopping. Negril obliges with the newly opened Times Square Mall, where you can browse several duty-free shops and stop for a drink at the Courtyard Café. You’ll find a terrific selection of designer watches and jewelry, perfumes, cigarettes, liquor, as well as the famous Blue Mountain coffee. Get a box of authentic Cuban cigars from Cigar World.
Where to stay when visiting Negril? If you want to go all out, stay where the VIPs do it: at the Caves. You’ll pay for the privilege and have to take a 12-minute taxi ride to the beach, but you’ll get all the atmosphere and elegance you could want.
The Caves’ five thatched-roof cottages sit on 2 acres atop cliffs within walking distance of Negril Lighthouse and Jamaica’s most westerly point, with sea breezes replacing air conditioning and no TVs unless you ask for one. Your stay at Les Caves, however, will be all-inclusive with the cost of your accommodation, including gourmet meals and drinks from the bar.
