Carnival Elation Cruise Review

The Elation is a ship built in 1998 for Carnival Cruise Lines. It was the first ship to have the azipod propulsion system. Everything you read about the Elation will include a little introductory text about the azipod system. You might be wondering what it is, so I’ll tell you. It’s a bit like having a driving wheel on your car. Instead of the power source pushing the ship, it pulls it instead. This makes maneuvering the ship much easier, so you can be sure that there will be no listing or the ship rolling over during your cruise. Plus, it reduces vibrations that cause motion sickness in people like me.

Enough about mechanics, because Carnival is having fun, isn’t it? Yes sir, they do. The Carnival Elation has three swimming pools. One with a 214 foot waterslide! This is where the music and pool games are. Expect it to be busy the first few days. My favorite pool is the one at the back of the ship on the veranda deck as it takes new passengers about 3 days to find it, so for the first two days of your cruise it is uncrowded. The last pool is the paddling pool on the promenade deck at the rear of the ship (rear). This pool is a bit like swimming in a toilet with all the babies in their swim diapers, which is not allowed.

If gambling is your thing, head to Casablanca Casino. There are over 200 slot machines to choose from, including several Mega Vending Machines that are linked to other Carnival ships across the fleet. The biggest jackpot I saw was over $1 million won on the defunct Carnival Jubilee. I’m sticking with the slots, I think it’s the fastest way to lose my allocated play money, and then I can carry on with the rest of the cruise. If you’re a more sophisticated player than me, there’s also Roulette, Blackjack and Caribbean Stud Poker to play.

Free drinks on a cruise-impossible you say? Not so. You can attend wine tastings or, as we do, check out the art an hour before the famous art auction where they give out free wine and cheese. If you’ve been on multiple cruises with the same company, you can attend the last guest party. Don’t consider it a waste of time if you like to drink – drinks are free and plentiful and all you have to do is watch a short spiel where the cruise line congratulates you on giving you a great vacation. There is usually a night where the alcohol is free for a tasting in the commercial area.

If you’re looking for healthier activities, you can head to the Jogging Track on the Elation’s Sun Deck or the Gym on the Sports Deck. The Carnival Elation has a half basketball court for your enjoyment and they provide the basketball to play with. Elation has a full-service spa on board. I admit I’ve never been to the spa but I know they offer foot massages for around $20 and everything up to a couples massage for $220. Sounds steep, but imagine how relaxing it would be to have a message and after you don’t have to massage someone else!

For the kids, there’s Camp Carnival. Our son has been to Camp Carnival on many cruises and loves it every time. Children are divided into age groups and have activities planned for those ages. I recommend that your child go on the first night you can register them for camp. They introduce themselves and socialize a bit. This doesn’t mean they have to go back and there are no additional charges, although we generally tip the staff as they can ruin your child’s cruise experience. Our son went to an activity called swimming under the stars where the pool was off limits at night except for the children in the program and so they had the pool and slide to themselves. You just drop your child off for all the activities they would like. For small children, a pager will be provided so that the staff can contact you in case your child wants to leave. Their activities take place inside the Children’s World, a 2500 square foot space filled with computers, toys and games. Activities for older children take place in different areas of the ship, for example pizza making takes place at Tiffany’s. On the last evening there will be a farewell party for the children. Arrive on time or you risk not getting in. All children receive a farewell gift at this party, i.e. a backpack or a CD case.

As for my favorite part, the art of fine dining there are myriad choices. Carnival Elation’s two formal dining rooms are Inspiration and Imagination, named after sister ships in the fleet. One of them will be assigned to you with a specific meal time. I always check the menu early in the day so I can decide if I want to show up at the appointed time or eat elsewhere at my leisure. Other places to eat on board the Elation are Tiffany’s which is the buffet restaurant which changes menu every day and is different for lunch than dinner or the snack bar on the Lido deck where fries and burgers are available for lunch. Tiffany’s lunch menu is called the taste of nations where one day may be Mexican food with salsa and fries and another may be American BBQ where fried chicken and potato salad are offered . There were also Indians and Italians that I remember. At the very back, to the right of Tiffany’s, you’ll find Carnival’s famous pizza, freshly made all the time. You can order a whole pizza and choose your toppings or get a slice fresh out of the oven. In the same place, deli sandwiches are made. This is a wonderful place to eat at the start of the trip as your fellow travelers won’t know it yet so there won’t be a queue for you.

Sushi is served on the promenade deck every evening. There was no raw fish (Sashimi) the week we sailed, but many varieties of fresh sushi prepared before your eyes to choose from. Of course wasabi, pickled ginger and soy sauce were also available. There’s never a sushi line either, I guess, because no one seems to realize that that’s also included in your cruise fare. Needless to say we went there every night. Tortilla chips and salsa were served on the boardwalk deck on Mexican day in the evening while a mariachi band played for us.

Room service, room service how I love you, let me count the ways. Room service is free but tipping is required. Pretzels or fries can accompany any sandwich – a delicious midnight snack. Room service was always prompt and correct. You can also order biscuits, raw vegetables, fruit and salad. At your service 24 hours a day.

If you need to keep in touch, the internet cafe offers internet usage at 75 cents per minute and various packages up to 250 minutes for 40 cents per minute. You can bring your own laptop and use it in the cafe but not in your cabin on the Elation. You pay for usage whether you use theirs or yours. I don’t know if it’s worth dragging it.

Speaking of cabins, we had a category 6C sea view cabin. We had three people in the cabin and we made ourselves comfortable. This ship has only 26 half-suites (category 11) and 28 suites (category 12). I don’t care which bridge because there are elevators to go up and down.

The Virtual World arcade is right next to the Mikado Lounge, a perfect place to let your teenager relax while you catch one of the Las Vegas-style shows in the lounge. There are the usual driving games and shooting games. Video games take tokens which are purchased directly inside the arcade. You can use your navigation panel and map to purchase tokens. At some point during your cruise there will be a video game tournament for the kids, in which case the games are free. This is part of the Camp Carnival program.

The Mikado Lounge is where all the shows take place. There was a comedy show, a magician, a hypnotist, a G rated girls dance show. There are also musical performances. The week I sailed there a special guest was announced at the end of a musical show. After a long preamble, Mr. Stevie Wonder was brought on stage. People ran from the living room theater to bring their friends and family to see Stevie Wonder. There were screams that I thought only the Beatles could elicit. Being a pale face from Canada, I’m not very clear on Mr. Wonder’s likeness, but I was wondering which cabin Stevie Wonder would be staying in On the Carnival Elation. Don’t get me wrong, the Carnival Elation is a beautiful ship, but someone of that caliber on my ship, how could that be? The lights went out, I could barely see. As I moved forward to get a better look at our famous shipmate, I fell down the stairs. I tumbled down several floors. Not a single person turned around or helped me up so captivated that they got a glimpse of this celebrity. In the end, “Stevie” took off his wig so it could be revealed that he was just a celebrity impersonator. Everyone moaned that they knew it all along and were never fooled. The next day, I looked like I had a meeting with UFC star Tito Ortiz.

The Mark Twain Library is a bit of a misnomer. There doesn’t seem to be a convenient way to access books, so bring your own. It’s beautiful and generally quiet.

The Romeo and Juliet Lounge is an elegantly styled room that has been used for private parties on some nights and for karaoke on others. Salsa was a popular nighttime activity here.

The Cole Porter Lounge features folk and country music and dancing. I’ve only been through here on my way to the ocean facing the massage chairs. Duke’s is the piano bar named after the talented Duke Ellington. It’s a jazz club with a striking entrance inspired by the Arc de Triomphe in Washington Square park. This is a great spot for photos around the little white grand piano. We saw a wedding reception being held here. Jekyll and Hyde nightclub is the perfect place to party. Monitors show your fellow cruisers dancing to the glittering beat. The giant heads of Jekyll and Hyde also move to the music – a bit spooky but cool after you’ve had a few drinks.

The Carnival Elation is a magnificent ship. A bit muted by carnival standards. Its decor is in copper and wood marquetry. If you’re hesitant to try Carnival Cruise Lines, this is the ship to try first. The service was second to none. The price of a Carnival cruise is always reasonable, but by booking well in advance, about eight months, we got an even better deal, some would say it’s a cheap cruise. Don’t be put off by Carnival’s former reputation of being a bunch of party ships. They are the Fun Ships after all. There’s sure to be a party if you want it, but there are dozens of places to read or sit quietly on the Carnival Elation. Nothing is more peaceful than sitting in a chair atop Carnival Elation’s teak deck watching the slowly passing ocean. Whatever your concept of fun, they deliver. Believe them when they say Carnival is having fun.
