Sport Cards Manufacturer – Upper Deck Profile
Sports card producers have come and gone over the years because they don’t bring anything innovative to the table. Upper Deck changed card collecting by introducing its very first product in 1989. That explains how it can go from innovative newcomer to industry giant in less than two decades.
In 1989, the Upper Deck Baseball set paved the way for many things that today’s collectors take for granted. For example, the enhanced cardstock, holographic stickers, and tamper evident packs that are commonplace among many brands’ sports cards today. But it was the first version of Upper Deck that introduced all these improvements. No doubt it was expensive at the time, but collectors didn’t seem to care and every set was sold out. To this day, the 1989 Upper Deck Ken Griffey Jr. Rookie Card remains one of the most iconic sports cards of all time.
New collectible card enhancements continued to pour in from the company’s California headquarters. Many collectors regard Upper Deck as the originator of inserting serially numbered and autographed cards into packs, and while it did not create the first cards with small pieces of material used for the event, they were the first to produce jersey cards used in the game.
Ironically, the core Upper Deck brand that was considered a premium product at the time is now on the low end, but trust Upper Deck to continue testing the frontiers of the high end market with its introduction from Ultimate Collection and Exquisite Collection.
Currently, Upper Deck is the only trading card producer with licenses to print cards of top professional hockey, basketball, baseball and soccer players. It has had the sole NHL license since 2007. After acquiring Fleer’s assets and brands, it continued to produce sports cards using the Fleer name and other well-known brands like Ultra and Hot Prospects.
Other Upper Deck Company branches include Upper Deck Authenticated, which manages authentic in-game memorabilia autographed by athletes like Michael Jordan, LeBron James and Tiger Woods, and Upper Deck Entertainment, the entity responsible for the popular Yu- Gi-Oh. ! and World of Warcraft trading card games.
