National Football League (NFL) Football – A League Of Its Own
Certain activities define the character of a nation. Likewise, the National Football League (NFL) defines the American character probably more than anything else. Conceived as the American Professional Football Association in 1920, it quickly adopted the name National Football League in 1922. Arguably the largest of all professional football leagues in America, the NFL is made up of 32 teams drawn from many US regions and cities.
With seeds in the American college football genre, NFL football is a direct descendant of rugby football. Rugby football, in turn, was brought from Canada to the United States in the last quarter of the 19th century. In its early days, it became synonymous with American college football with McGill University in Montreal inviting Harvard University in Quebec to play the Canadian version of rugby football.
Meanwhile, professional American football was gaining momentum despite the famous elite college football games. This was mostly on the East Coast, while professional football stole the show in the Midwest. The American Professional Football Association was founded in Ohio with legendary athlete Jim Thorpe as its president. It started with eleven teams and was not strictly a league. The main purpose was to put an end to stealing players from other teams to win a football game.
With the birth of the NFL, the rules became stricter and the laws began to be enforced. However, teams continued to arrive and depart at the same rate. It was in the 1970s and 1980s that NFL football finally secured its position at the heart and culture of America as the nation’s most important football event. The Super Bowl, the name given to the final game of an NFL series, has become an undeclared but accepted national holiday.
What sealed NFL football in the hearts of every American was the cult following it created. It wasn’t just the game that mattered; it was the whole event, the entertainment, the TV coverage and everything that added to the glamor of the football series. To further add to the pomp, the NFL has introduced preseason exhibition games. And to add a little more flavor to the game, the NFL opted to play them internationally. This became known as American Bowls.
In 1991, he formed the American Football World League with development goals in mind. This body, currently known as NFL Europa, has teams in Germany and the Netherlands. In 2003, the NFL League launched its own cable television channel, the NFL Network.
